Interior renovation of a ground-floor flat in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona for a foreign family. The dwelling preserves key historical elements such as stone walls, Catalan vaults, and its original structural character, which define the spatial identity of the space. The layout opens towards interior patios, which become essential to bring natural light deep into the apartment.
The design approach aims to balance the richness of the historic fabric with a contemporary and functional language. A restrained industrial palette is introduced to highlight the original architecture rather than compete with it, allowing old and new layers to coexist in a coherent way. Natural light, material contrast, and spatial continuity guide the intervention throughout the project.
Key interventions focus on enhancing livability while respecting the existing structure. The open-plan kitchen reinforces the connection between spaces, while strategic openings and visual axes improve the perception of depth and light. Exposed stone, reclaimed materials, and metal elements are combined to create a subtle dialogue between heritage and contemporary intervention, reinforcing the character of the home without erasing its history.
The project resolves the challenge of transforming a dense, historic ground-floor apartment into a brighter and more fluid contemporary home. It achieves this by carefully reorganizing spatial relationships and enhancing natural light, while preserving the character of the original stone structure.
