Padilla Apartment Renovation in Barcelona
This project reimagines an existing apartment in Barcelona through a careful balance between conservation and contemporary intervention. The design approach focuses on enhancing spatial clarity while preserving the original character of the dwelling, working with the existing structure rather than replacing it. The result is a refined domestic space defined by light, material continuity, and subtle architectural gestures.
The original layout was rethought to improve the flow of circulation and the relationship between day and night areas. By removing unnecessary partitions and reconfiguring key spaces, the apartment gains a stronger sense of openness while maintaining clearly defined functional zones. The intervention prioritises spatial efficiency and visual continuity across rooms.
A restrained material palette was used to reinforce the identity of the project. Existing elements were preserved wherever possible, while new finishes were introduced with a focus on coherence and durability. The combination of natural textures, neutral tones, and continuous surfaces creates a calm atmosphere that enhances the perception of space and light.
Natural light becomes a central design element, shaping the way each room is experienced throughout the day. The intervention amplifies the original openings and uses reflective and soft materials to distribute light deeper into the apartment. The result is a more balanced, warm, and comfortable domestic environment.
A key gesture of the project was the restoration and integration of the original carpentry, which had been partially altered over time. By recovering and highlighting these elements, the design reinstates a sense of authenticity and continuity with the building’s history. The restored windows and doors not only improve thermal and acoustic performance but also reintroduce the original proportions and rhythm of the façade within the interior experience, reinforcing the dialogue between old and new.
